Watch: How SB's Rent Control Brawl Shapes Mayor’s Race; Human Face of Deportation Cruelty; IV Podcast
Our All-Star Panel of Top SB Journalists breaks down the City Hall showdown that gave tenants a big victory, and goes behind-the-scenes on new local reporting on immigration, IV and more...
This week, tenant rights advocates won a slim but decisive victory at Santa Barbara City Hall, when the city council’s liberal faction imposed on landlords a freeze on rents for many residential properties.
It remains unclear whether winning the battle will result in losing the war.
On this week’s edition of Newsmakers TV, Josh Molina, Ryan P. Cruz, and Christina McDermott join the genial host to break down the politics and policy of the council’s 4-to-3 rent freeze vote, the latest step towards a sweeping rent control ordinance.
Broadly, the rent control conflict is all but certain to shape the 2026 races for three council seats being vacated by termed-out members, and now takes center stage in the face-off between Randy Rowse, the incumbent mayor seeking re-election who opposes rent control, and his chief challenger, council member Kristen Sneddon, who just won the endorsement of the Democratic county committee, largely for her embrace of the disputed social engineering policy as the centerpiece of her platform.
Tuesday’s council meeting was marked by hours of contentious and sometimes bitter public testimony about the issue. Piled atop the enactment of further regulations on the rental market, some of the rancorous rhetoric could fuel a backlash from property owners, manifested as litigation against the city, council candidates backed by real estate money, a referendum aimed at undoing the rent freeze, or all of the above.
Notably, a bellicose and inflammatory rant by Chelsea Lancaster, a performative left-wing activist and City College bureaucrat, not only spewed gasoline on the fire of an already polarized debate over rent regulations, but also attracted widespread media attention because of her over-the-top personal attacks on individual council members, who happen to differ with her on the matter.

Christina offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at “Welcome to Isla Vista,” her well-reported and well-crafted six-part podcast, which provides a deep dive into the history, economics, culture and political landscape of UCSB’s student ghetto.
Ryan talks about his reporting for this week’s cover story in the Independent, headlined “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow: What Happens After an ICE Arrest” which puts a human face on Trump’s shameful war on immigrants through the lens of Jupiter Lara Castillo, a 27-year old home health aide living legally in Santa Barbara, who was snatched off the street, brutalized and deported to Mexico.
Josh reprises last week’s joyous public celebration of the political rise of state Senator Monique Limón, who just became Senate President Pro Tempore, among the most powerful posts in California state government, as hundreds of friends and supporters gathered at the Luke to see her symbolically sworn in by erstwhile Vice President Kamala Harris.
