Watch: Fearless Forecasts on City Hall's Big Paseo Vote; "Threat is Real" on New Offshore Drilling; SBHS, UCSB, Carp, Massage Scandal
Our all-star panel of top local journalists breaks down the week's biggest stories in Santa Barbara, from City Council's showdown over downtown development to SB's shakedown of city's body workers.
Next Tuesday, Santa Barbara’s City Council faces a pivotal decision that, for better or worse, will shape the future of downtown for decades to come.
City Administrator Kelly McAdoo is seeking authorization from the council to move ahead on a complex, costly and controversial proposal to redevelop the withering Paseo Nuevo shopping center. The centerpiece is construction of 223 units of housing in the old Macy’s building - including a small and uncertain number earmarked as “affordable” - amid hope the project will act as a catalyst for the economic revival of State Street.
Whether or not McAdoo has secured at least four votes for the plan is still unknown, and on this week’s episode of Newsmakers TV, Josh Molina and Ryan P. Cruz, who both have reported and written extensively on the issue, provide some insight, analysis and fearless forecasts of where things are headed next week.
Callie Fausey joins the gang to break down the details of the Trump Administration’s latest bid to increase oil drilling off the Central Coast. Considerable political opposition already has gathered, led by Gov. Gavin Newsom, California’s U.S. Senators, Rep. Salud Carbajal and every major environmental organization, but Callie says, “the threat is real.”
Plus: a first-person look inside Santa Barbara High School’s epic 150th anniversary festivities; an update on how new UCSB Chancellor Dennis Assanis scored an $8 million Hope Ranch mansion; more details on that absurd proposal to build an 18-story apartment building in Carpinteria; and the amazing but true story of the city’s bid to gouge individual proprietors in the local massage and body work industry.
All this and more, right here, right now on Newsmakers TV.
