I enjoyed your article but I disagree with the statement about the Spiritual Exercises “which were designed by the Society of Jesus.”
The Exercises were Ignatius Loyola’s own creation made over time but begun in Manresa before he met his companions. If you look at translations the notes always refer to amendments “made in Ignatius’ own hand.” While the other founders of the Society learned to give the Exercises, Ignatius was the first spiritual director in the tradition.
Thanks cuz...Phil and I used to debate - who's the most intelligent person you've covered in politics - Clinton or Jerry - and I always took the latter...some of the most fun had in journalism was trekking with Brown through New Hampshire, Illinois and New York in his "Winter Soldier" presidential campaign of 1992, when he called attention to many of the issues that were damaging the Democratic party as it became ever more corporate...Hope you're well...
Jerry,,, This was a wonderful glimpse at Jerry Brown’s past and how he grew to become the politician led by values. He was always my choice….but in a country where ‘we coulda, shoulda, woulda’, the folks I backed never got a chance to lead. And here we are. Thanks for this.

Thanks for the insight!

Great column. Many thanks for the acknowledgement of Brown's most-worthy influences.
