Sharp piece. The Daniel Bell reference about democracy's cultural contradictions is particualrly apt right now. Bell's argument that prosperity erodes the values that created it applies beyod economics to security policy too. I've seen this play out in conversations where people want both robust defense and zero sacrifice, which Bell would recognize as the affluence paradox.
